Hello everyone,
Just wanted to keep everyone posted regarding the Veterans Day Parade occurring next week. The festivities begin on Thursday, November 10th in Times Square. The NYC Veterans Day Band of Pride will honor the victims, their families, first responders and veterans with a high profile mass band performance.
On Friday, November 11, 2011, New York City will pay homage to veterans with the annual New York City Veterans Day Parade. Having been honored in NYC since 1929, the parade is a huge event every year. In New York City, it's estimated that more than 20,000 people come out to show their support, march, and celebrate. But what is the parade really all about? If you're in the city, where can you see the parade? Let's investigate.
Stepping off at 11 a.m. from Madison Square Park (Fifth Avenue at 23rd Street), the parade marches due north on Fifth Avenue to 59th Street. But 11 a.m. is not the real start of the parade. Veterans Day was first established to give due reverence to those who lost their lives during the (at the time) war to end all wars: World War I. Of course, we would go on to have many more wars and countless casualties in the armed forces, so now the parade honors all those veterans, living or deceased. So, to incorporate this reverence, an hour before step-off time, there is a wreath-laying ceremony at the Eternal Flame in Madison Square Park. The wreath event is far more quiet than the parade, but still one that everyone can come to and pay their respects. Below I am including a map and also a wonderful video with the historical aspects of how this parade came about to be and everything it has gone through through out time. It's quite interesting - hope you enjoy.
